Chapter Three — Data Types and Operators (continued)
Overview
The IsNullString function checks a string variable or array entry as to whether it ever contained data.
Syntax/Parameters
Syntax
boolean = IsNullString ( string data );
boolean = IsNullString ( wstring data );
Parameters
data
A string or wstring specifying a string or string entry. An incorrect type will result in a runtime error.
Return Value
Returns a boolean value as TRUE if the string or string array entry has never been set.
Remarks
Null differs from empty in that making a string empty is a proactive programming step. For example:
string s;
s = "";
Prior to s being set to an empty string, the value of s is null. From an equivalency standpoint, null and empty are the same. However, if one wanted to know whether an array entry was set to empty or never actually used, a null test is required. For example:
string s[100];
s[50] = "";
In this has, element 50 will be an empty string while 0-49 will be null.
